A drastic jump in fuel prices is expected

There will be a 150 euro surcharge on 1 ton of diesel fuel, which is about 40 and a few cents per liter - this will be the increase from January 1, 2027

A jump in fuel prices is expected due to a European directive. It should come into force from January 1, 2027 and will have to be applied in our country. The document says that for every liter of fuel we sell - which goes to transport or heating buildings - we will have to pay quotas - carbon emissions. They will be traded at the European level. Their price will probably be the highest - about 50 euros per 1 ton. 3 tons of carbon dioxide are emitted with 1 ton of diesel fuel. This means that there will be a 150 euro surcharge on 1 ton of diesel fuel, which is about 40 and a few cents per liter - this will be the increase from January 1, 2027. This was said by Svetoslav Benchev from the Bulgarian Oil and Gas Association in “Your Day” on NOVA NEWS.

He pointed out that the quota was poorly designed, since the quotas are very small, and the scheme itself covers both transport and buildings - incompatible sectors. In his words, this will lead to an unpleasant situation for consumers.

Benchev emphasized that this has nothing to do with the adoption of the euro, but with the policy of the European Union.

"The idea of the directive is to make fossil fuels increasingly expensive so that other alternatives are sought, and there are none", he explained.

Benchev said that 17 EU countries are against the entry into force of this directive. He added that a coalition between individual countries must be formed to resist this proposal, and Bulgaria must also be included.

Regarding fuel prices after the introduction of the euro, Benchev stated that the price will be calculated as required by law.
