West Nile fever in Sofia. A 55-year-old resident of Sofia fell ill with the infection without having left the country, the Ministry of Health told the newspaper “Telegraph“.
The patient was discharged in good condition, with evidence of multiple mosquito bites. This is the first case in Bulgaria this summer.
In the past, 23 patients were registered, three of whom died.
Due to the increase in cases of diseases transmitted by mosquitoes in Europe, they will be closely monitored for four tropical infections that they carry.
The focus will be not only on West Nile fever, but also chikungunya, dengue, and Zika, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control announced.
Last year, 304 local cases of the dengue virus were reported in Europe. There is an increasing trend compared to previous years (130 cases in 2023 and 71 - in 2022).
