The elections for the People's Council (parliament) in Syria will be held on October 5, 2025 throughout the country, according to the SANA news agency, citing the Syrian Supreme Election Commission.
According to the procedure, the process begins with the formation of subcommittees of the Supreme Election Commission, which appoint electoral bodies (note: electoral colleges), responsible for accepting applications from candidates. Based on these applications, preliminary lists are drawn up. Appeals against the registration of candidates are allowed before the final lists are approved.
The voting is conducted by the electoral bodies (electoral colleges) through direct and secret ballot, and the final results are confirmed by presidential decree. One-third of the 210 deputies - 70 members of parliament - are appointed by the president.
Voting for the 210 members of the National Assembly will be held "in all constituencies", although last month the electoral commission announced that voting would be postponed in three provinces - Suwayda, Hasakah and Raqqa - due to instability and the presence of armed groups.
The upcoming campaign will be the first since the formation of the new administration led by interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who came to power after the flight of his predecessor Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
The new parliament is expected to play a key role in approving legislation aimed at economic reforms, as well as in ratifying agreements that could change the country's foreign policy alliances.
In March of this year, Syria issued a constitutional declaration outlining the framework for a transitional period under al-Sharaa's leadership.
