Palestinian President Promises Elections and Constitution After Gaza War

Delegations from Israel and the United States Did Not Attend Conference on Peaceful Settlement of the Crisis

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has pledged to hold parliamentary and presidential elections after the end of the Gaza war and announced that a constitution will be drafted within a year, BNR reported.

Abbas joined the Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Issue and the Implementation of a Two-State Solution via video link after the US authorities denied visas to Palestinian delegates.

The delegations from Israel and the United States did not attend the conference.

Mahmoud Abbas called for support from the international community "so that Palestine can become a full member state of the UN" and added: "We have recognized Israel's right to exist and we continue to do so".

"I call on Israel to sit at the negotiating table and I appeal to the people of Israel: Our future and yours must be accompanied by peace", the Palestinian president said.

For his part, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his disappointment that the Palestinian delegation was not granted access to the UN General Assembly in New York and could not attend in person.

He called for an immediate ceasefire and the immediate release of hostages in Gaza, adding: "If there are no two states, there will be no peace".
