Russia's new "Burevestnik" missile will be able to bypass the American air defense system "Golden Dome", the development of which was announced by US President Donald Trump, writes The New York Times, citing experts, Focus reports.

According to the publication, yesterday's statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin about the preparation for the deployment of the cruise missile was "a sharp signal to the West after the failure of plans for a high-level meeting with President Trump".

The Kremlin says that it will be able to fly much longer than other missiles and is capable of bypassing missile defense systems.

"This is a small flying Chernobyl. This is a bad development of events. This is another science fiction weapon that will destabilize the situation and will be difficult to deal with within the framework of arms control, says Jeffrey Lewis, a nuclear non-proliferation expert at "Middlebury College".

Some experts believe that the statement about "Burevestnik" should be viewed not so much in the context of the war in Ukraine, but in connection with Moscow's proposal to extend START III (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty - START 3), the last remaining arms control treaty between the United States and Russia. Its term expires in February.

Extending the agreement for a year will help the Kremlin focus its resources on the war in Ukraine, avoiding a costly arms buildup, the NYT writes.

In general, analysts doubt the revolutionary capabilities of the "Burevestnik", calling it "not a very useful system". It is designed to respond to a nuclear attack by the United States, but such a strike would be directed at the "Burevestnik" launch sites. However, experts see this as a worrying development for global security and a new stage in the arms race.
