Mother of man who died under Novi Sad train station canopy begins hunger strike

Police push citizens who support Diana Hrka's demands and actions out of parliament

An incident occurred in front of the Serbian parliament building, where earlier today the mother of one of the victims of the collapse of the canopy at the Novi Sad train station a year ago began a hunger strike, it became clear from posts on social networks, BTA reported.

Diana Hrka is the mother of Stefan Hrka, who is one of the 16 people who died after the collapse of the canopy at the Novi Sad train station on November 1, 2024.

The police pushed citizens who support Hrka's demands and actions out of parliament, but they returned again and blocked the nearby intersection at "Takovska" Street.

The police confiscated today the bus that brought students from Novi Sad to the protest in front of the parliament in Belgrade. The students are supporting Stefan Hurka's mother.

Diana Hurka began a hunger strike at 11:52 a.m. local time today (12:52 p.m. Bulgarian time) and told BTA that she intends to "go all the way".

At 11:52 a.m. on November 1, 2024, the canopy of the recently renovated train station in Novi Sad collapsed.

"I started the hunger strike at 11:52 a.m., the demands are clear - first, there should be sentences for the collapse of the canopy of the station, the release of all detained students and early parliamentary elections to be scheduled. I will go all the way!", said Hrka.

During her statement in front of the Serbian parliament building, she was surrounded by students and citizens who applauded her in support.

Students participating in faculty blockades walked from Novi Sad to Belgrade this morning in solidarity with Hrka's demands and actions.
