Bulgaria must accelerate the expansion of the capacity of the Chiren gas storage facility to 1 billion cubic meters. This is reported by the Bulgarian National Radio, referring to the European Commission's report on the State of the Energy Union in 2025.
The report examines the progress of the EU and individual member states towards the energy and climate goals that must be met by 2030, and it also states that Bulgaria should support the modernization of the interconnector that connects it with Greece.
According to the report, in 2024, electricity and gas prices for households in Bulgaria were among the lowest in the EU despite a slight increase. But at the same time, we are in fourth place in terms of the highest wholesale electricity prices - 102 euros per kilowatt-hour. While prices have fallen slightly against the backdrop of lower gas prices, they have risen first in the spring and summer, and then in the fall, diverging from the trend in Central European markets.
The report also notes that Bulgaria has not yet completely abandoned Russian fuels, but has made efforts.
We have also made efforts to strengthen the security of supply and diversify natural gas sources through investments in infrastructure. After the expiration of the Russian-Ukrainian gas transit agreement, Bulgaria remained the only place in the EU from where Russian gas enters the union.
