US President Donald Trump announced in a post on the platform “Truth Social“ that his government will pay “dividends“ of at least $2,000 to most US citizens, DPA reported. The only exceptions will be people with high incomes, but Trump did not specify a specific income threshold or payment deadline, BTA reports.
The statement comes about a week after a series of victories by the Democratic Party in local and state elections, including for the governorships in New Jersey and Virginia, as well as for the Public Service Commission in Georgia - a traditionally Republican state. The results provoked criticism among Trump himself that he does not pay enough attention to his electorate, to whom he promised to reduce the cost of living. Meanwhile Inflation in the country remains around 3%, and many Americans express dissatisfaction with high prices.
In his publication, Trump said that the tariffs would bring in “trillions of dollars“ that could be used to reduce the national debt. He called critics of the tariff policies “fools“ and described the United States as “the richest and most respected country in the world“, with “almost zero inflation“ and “a record stock market value“.
Some of the country's small businesses have complained that the tariffs are making it difficult for them, and some have filed a lawsuit against them, which is already in the Supreme Court. Analysts also warn of possible negative consequences of the rapid development of artificial intelligence - mass layoffs and higher electricity costs. In large cities such as New York, housing costs remain serious problem.
Trump had already raised the idea of similar payments months ago, but did not implement it then, DPA recalls.
