Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven leading industrial democracies (G7) are gathering in Canada today for the second day of their meeting to discuss the war in Ukraine and efforts to implement the Gaza peace plan, DPA reported, BTA reports.
The talks are being held in Niagara, in the southeastern province of Ontario, with today's agenda including a working session dedicated to Ukraine. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud is also expected to join the discussion of the future of Gaza.
The G7 includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Canada, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the group, is hosting a foreign ministers' meeting for the second time this year.
Observers will be watching to see whether US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his colleagues can reach a unified approach to ending the war in Ukraine, which began in 2022.
During a leaders' meeting in the Canadian Rockies earlier this year, the G7 failed to reach an agreement on the issue. At the time, US President Donald Trump expressed skepticism about the idea of tightening sanctions against Moscow, supported by European partners.
Later, however, the Trump administration changed its position and introduced new sanctions against Russia - the first since the beginning of his second term.
According to information from the German Foreign Ministry, the ministers will also discuss the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, China's actions in the Indo-Pacific region, as well as issues related to maritime and energy security and access to critically important raw materials, including rare earth metals.
