The Iraqi authorities will freeze the funds of armed groups supported by Iran, including the Lebanese Shiite organization "Hezbollah" and the Yemeni Houthis, reports „Reuters“, reports News.bg.

The decision is expected to be received positively in Washington, which has long sought to limit Iranian influence in Iraq and other Middle Eastern countries where Tehran has allies.

For Iran, Iraq is a key partner for maintaining its economic stability under international sanctions. At the same time, Baghdad, which maintains relations with both the United States and Iran, fears falling under the blows of the pressure exerted by the administration of President Donald Trump against Tehran.

Iran relies on serious military, political and economic influence in Iraq through powerful Shiite militias and parties it supports. However, the increased pressure from the US comes at a time when Tehran's position in the region has been weakened after Israeli strikes on its allied structures.
