Presidential elections in Syria will be held in four years under a new constitution. This was announced by the interim president of the Arab Republic, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, speaking at the forum in Doha.
„We held a comprehensive conference for national dialogue, which resulted in an interim constitutional declaration. This declaration authorized the president to remain in power for 5 years, during which a number of laws will be adopted and a constitution will be drafted, which will serve as the fundamental principle of the system of governance. “We will definitely hold elections in 4 years“, Al-Sharaa said, emphasizing that “this process requires more time due to the nature and complexity of the transitional period.”
He noted that the transitional government organized parliamentary elections “despite the difficult circumstances the country finds itself in“, emphasizing that this process took place “in accordance with the current situation“ in the absence of a full-fledged infrastructure.
On March 13, Al-Sharaa signed a constitutional declaration that serves as Syria's legal basis for the five-year transitional period. According to the document, all executive powers... Power is concentrated in the hands of the head of state. The president is authorized to appoint members of the Constitutional Court and declare a state of emergency.
