Any peace agreement in Ukraine must contain strong security guarantees, said today the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaia Kallas after the meeting of European foreign ministers in Brussels, BTA reports.
She specified that the online conversation scheduled today with the US representatives in the peace talks - President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and the president's son-in-law Jared Kushner - was not meaningful because the quality of the connection was very poor. Kallas admitted that this could be due to a cyberattack.
The High Representative noted that at today's meeting, the ministers imposed sanctions on people associated with the Russian companies "Lukoil" and "Rosneft", and have decided to update the list of ships from the so-called Russian shadow fleet for fuel trade every month in violation of European sanctions.
Asked under what conditions the EU would one day lift sanctions against Russia, Kallas explained that this had not been discussed among European foreign ministers. Certainly, there are no such conditions now, Russia continues to reject peace, she said.
Only Ukraine can decide the terms of a peace agreement, but we know that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin will not stop at Donbass and will want more, Kallas commented. According to her, the US may be insisting that Ukraine become part of the EU as early as 2027, as envisaged in the draft of the agreement under discussion, even without Kiev having started negotiations yet, and this could be good in order to remove the obstacles created by one of the EU countries in this process (Hungary - editor's note).
Regarding the negotiations on providing funds for Ukraine in the next two years, Kallas pointed out that there is still no solution and the work is very difficult. According to her, assistance to Kiev is expensive, but the price for the lack of support would be higher. Kallas explained that this year the EU has provided Kiev with 27 billion euros for military purposes.
