Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced that early elections will be held in Serbia by the end of 2026, and local elections will be held in several municipalities in the country in five to six months, local media reported, quoted by BTA.

"Before the end of the term of the current parliament, we will go to these elections and then people will have the opportunity to evaluate the work of each of us", Vucic told the Serbian national television RTS.

He pointed out that in the elections, citizens will decide "whether we want to live in a dignified and normal Serbia".

Vucic stressed that the elections must take into account “the plans and programs of the opponents“ and that a “better plan and program” must be presented.

Anti-government protests have been taking place in Serbia for more than a year, led by students who blocked over 60 faculties.

The protests erupted spontaneously after the tragedy in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad, where on November 1, 2024, the concrete canopy of a recently renovated railway station collapsed, killing 16 people and seriously injuring one.

The protesters are demanding that those responsible be held legally and politically accountable, accusing the authorities of corruption and nepotism.

On May 5, a request was raised for the first time to call early parliamentary elections, which the Serbian president refused to schedule.

Subsequently, in various statements, Vučić repeatedly mentioned the months of May and December as possible dates for holding them. of the early vote.
