Sarcastic messages briefly appeared on a large screen in the hall where Russian President Vladimir Putin was holding his annual press conference and a "direct line" telephone conversation, Reuters reported.

"Not a direct line, but a circus", read one such comment.

Another, using Putin's first and middle names, read: "Vladimir Vladimirovich, it's Friday already, can we get the alcohol out?".

The unsolicited comments appeared on screens showing incoming text messages intended for Putin at the marathon annual event, which ordinary Russians are encouraged to ask questions about.

The Kremlin did not immediately comment on their appearance at the meticulously planned and a choreographed press conference watched by millions of Russians. Putin didn't mention them either.

One of the messages, alluding to the state of the Russian economy, asked why ordinary Russians were worse off than people in Papua New Guinea.

Another, referring to Putin's ruling United Russia party, said: "Given life in the country, it's strange that it won a majority in the elections! Maybe the elections are a fabrication?".
