More than 41 million residents of the northeastern part of the US, from Maryland to Maine, are under a severe weather warning due to a snowstorm, NBC News reports.
Among the states that have declared a state of emergency are Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. Authorities in these regions are imposing travel restrictions and canceling school classes.
Snowdrifts of more than 70 cm and wind gusts of more than 30 m/s are expected in some areas.
According to the specialized portal FlightAware, 3,400 flights were canceled in the United States on Sunday, and another 7,300 were postponed.
More than 162,000 electricity customers were left without power, with the most serious power outages in New Jersey and Delaware, with more than 32,000 customers experiencing power outages in each of these states.
Earlier, New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani declared a state of emergency in the metropolis due to an approaching snowstorm.
The UN announced that it would close its headquarters in the city on February 23 due to bad weather.
