Iran is launching Shahed drones across the Persian Gulf and beyond, attacking hotels, embassies and military bases, most likely indiscriminately. To destroy them, missiles worth millions of dollars are launched. As The Telegraph writes, the US and its allies understand that this cannot last long, reports Focus.
At the same time, Ukraine has a cheap solution, namely Sting interceptor drones. Specifically, the country's President Volodymyr Zelensky has offered his allies defense equipment of its own production worth $ 1,000.
In return, the head of state of Ukraine is asking for American Patriot missiles as part of a "exchange of technology or arms" with the US and the Middle East.
"They have Patriot missiles, but hundreds or thousands of Shahed cannot be intercepted with Patriot missiles – it is too expensive. That is why they need interceptors like we have. At the same time, we lack PAC-2 and PAC-3 missiles,” Zelensky wrote on social networks.
Initially, the proposal was not given much attention, but, as the Financial Times reports, the Pentagon and another Gulf government are now negotiating to purchase interceptors.
“Many of Iran’s attacks have been thwarted because Gulf states use advanced US-made air defense systems to protect their cities from bombing, but this has put a significant strain on expensive ammunition stocks in Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain,” the British newspaper recalls.
That is why the advantages of Ukraine’s proposal are twofold. The first is the price.
"Following a tactic Moscow has been using in Ukraine for several years, Iran has filled the skies with its cheap Shahed drones to force its adversaries to spend expensive air defenses," the article states.
On February 28 alone, Iran launched 541 Shahed drones at the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which launched expensive interceptors to defend itself, says Kelly Grieco, a senior fellow at the Stimson Center, a U.S. think tank.
"For every dollar Iran spends on drones, the UAE spends about $20-28 to shoot them down... This is the same math Russia has been using against Ukraine for three years now," she adds.
The next advantage is their effectiveness, which has been proven during the war in Ukraine.
As stated by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Oleksandr Syrsky, in February over 70% of the drones launched by Russia at Kiev were shot down by interceptors.
