Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Friedrich Nielsen said on Monday he was a proud nation that strives to uphold world order, challenging recent comments about the Arctic island by U.S. President Donald Trump, Reuters reported, BTA reported.

Yesterday, Trump expressed his disappointment with NATO as relations within the alliance reached a crisis point over the war with Iran, saying the organization "was not there when it was needed" and that he still remembers Greenland, which he said was "a big, badly managed piece of ice."

“The important thing for us is to preserve the global community that we built after World War II, where we have a defense alliance that we respect and where international law is respected by all countries“, Nielsen said.

“These things are now contested and I think all allies need to come together to try to preserve them. I hope that happens“, he added.

At the same time, Nielsen took issue with Trump's description of his country.

“We are not some piece of ice. We are a proud population of 57,000 people working every day as good global citizens, with full respect for all our allies“, the Greenlandic prime minister stressed.
