SDSM Chairman Dimitar Kovachevski has resigned

Convening of congress and internal party elections for a new leader is forthcoming

SDSM Chairman Dimitar Kovachevski has officially confirmed his resignation from his post at a meeting of the party's Executive Council, BTA reported.

Even on the election night of May 8, when the SDSM turned out to have an extremely low result, he announced that there should be a new leadership in the party and a congress should be convened, the media in North Macedonia wrote.

In the letter that Kovachevski sent to the Executive Committee and to the chairman of the Central leadership, he wrote that the resignation from the chairman's post in the party is a moral act in the context of the electoral defeat of the SDSM and calls on the entire leadership of the party to do the same.

"Such an act is a practice in all European and world democracies, as we claim to be, and it should be a practice of all party leaderships after an election failure," the publication quotes Kovacevski as saying.

He has confirmed his assessment that the loss of the elections that took place in the Republic of North Macedonia on May 8 is a heavy blow for SDSM and the party must reform, and he again insisted on convening a congress to analyze the electoral results results, after which internal party elections for the chairman of the SDSM will be held.
