The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi will soon visit the nuclear power plant in Russia's Kursk region, which borders Ukraine and where a Ukrainian offensive is currently underway, reported " France Press", quoted by BTA.

„We can confirm this visit for next week”, an IAEA spokesman told AFP today, without giving details.

According to the Russian nuclear agency "Rosatom", the Ukrainian offensive that began on August 6 puts the Kursk NPP at risk.

The IAEA called for “maximum restraint” in the area of the site a few days later, when fighting was raging nearby “to avoid a nuclear accident that could have serious radiological consequences”.

Rafael Grossi then said that he was personally in contact with the competent authorities in both countries to continue to inform the international community of the situation, which according to the Russian authorities at the time was under control.

Since the start of the war, the IAEA has regularly warned of the risk of a nuclear disaster, particularly at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, which has been occupied by Russia since March 2022. Although the plant is currently shut down, it has repeatedly come under fire, which Russia and Ukraine accuse each other, says AFP.
