Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda criticized the failure of Western leaders to fulfill their threats of sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

Commenting on whether German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has undermined Europe's credibility, Nauseda told today's edition of the German newspaper “Bild“: “Absolutely, and that's a problem“.

“This not only affects the reliability of our sanctions, but also the reliability of all our measures towards Russia and our support for Ukraine,“ the president said.

After visiting Kiev last month, Merz, together with the president of France Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk have called on Russia to agree to a 30-day ceasefire.

“We often announce that we will support Ukraine and that we will supply it with combat aircraft, long-range missiles and ammunition, but we are not in a position to keep these promises,“ Nauseda said.

The Ukrainian side needs equipment and ammunition now, not in the future, he said, stressing that the sanctions against Russia at the moment are not decisive enough.
