Hurricane "Erin" may intensify in the coming days as it approaches the Bahamas in the Caribbean, a large area in the North Atlantic that is already affected by strong winds and heavy rains with a risk of flooding and landslides, the US weather services warned yesterday, quoted by the Associated Press and BTA.
In Puerto Rico, a US territory devastated in 2017 by Hurricane "Maria", more than 150,000 people are already without power due to the passage of Hurricane "Erin".
The first hurricane of the season over the North Atlantic intensified on Saturday, reaching the maximum category five, defined as "catastrophic" by the US Hurricane Center (HCC), before the wind speed decreased and it was downgraded to a category three.
However, at around 2:00 p.m. EST yesterday, the HCC warned that "Erin" was likely to re-strengthen in the coming days" and that "a tropical storm warning was issued for the southeastern Bahamas”, not far from the coast of Florida.
