German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil arrived on an unannounced visit to Kiev for talks with the Ukrainian government, DPA and Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
Russian President Vladimir "Putin should have no illusions that German support for Ukraine could collapse", stressed Klingbeil, who is also the leader of the SPD.
"Quite the opposite: we remain the second largest supporter of Ukraine globally and the largest in Europe," he added. "Ukraine can continue to rely on Germany".
"This is about both Ukrainian and European security", the vice chancellor stressed, noting that he was coordinating with Chancellor Friedrich Merz his actions to support Ukraine in a potential peace process.
Klingbeil stressed the need for "reliable security guarantees that guarantee lasting peace in Ukraine".
The vice chancellor is expected to meet representatives of the Ukrainian government, parliament and civil society during his visit.
Following the White House summit between US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders last week, Kiev's European allies have been working on guarantees for Ukraine's security after the end of the war with Russia. They are considered key for Ukraine, which has been defending itself for three and a half years, DPA notes.
