US Congress proposes halting all trade with Russia

A bill has been introduced to restore the Jackson-Vanik Amendment for this purpose

A bill has been introduced to restore the Jackson-Vanik Amendment in the US Congress to end all trade with Russia, said Congressman Joe Wilson.

“After the attack on Poland, I am grateful for the opportunity to introduce this bill to restore the Jackson-Vanik Amendment for Russia, which would end all trade. Presidents Obama and John Kerry wrongly repealed this law during their mistaken “reload“ with Russia“, Wilson wrote on the social network X.

In 1974, Congress approved, and President Gerald Ford signed, the Jackson-Vanik Amendment to restrict trade with the USSR. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the norm was suspended in words, but in practice it continued to be used. Almost half a century later, this amendment was repealed by former US President Barack Obama.
