The funds will be used to strengthen the infrastructure of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity and workforce development. The company plans to invest in Japan over a four-year period until 2029.
Microsoft Vice President Brad Smith told Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi that they will join forces with SoftBank Group and cloud services provider Sakura Internet.
In addition to modernizing the technical infrastructure, the investments will be aimed at training specialists and strengthening cybersecurity. In turn, Prime Minister Takaichi noted the importance of the project for Japan's data sovereignty.
As noted, this is Microsoft's largest investment plan in the country. In 2024, the company has already invested $2.9 billion in the development of data centers and cloud services.
