Former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle do not plan to renew their contract with the country's largest streaming service Netflix, Deadline reports.
The couple owns the production company Higher Ground Productions, which has been creating projects with Netflix since 2018. "We had a partnership with Netflix. Now we are in the process of moving to a more independent future, in which we can work with a number of independent studios," the portal quotes Obama's speech at a History Channel event in Philadelphia.
The deal with Netflix expires in 2026, the portal specifies. At the same time, Higher Ground Productions will continue to collaborate with the streaming service on existing projects, the portal's sources explain.
Initially, the deal between Netflix and Higher Ground Productions, which was concluded in 2018, was of an exclusive nature - the jointly created projects were available only to subscribers of the streaming service. The contract was renewed in 2024, and since then Netflix has only had the rights for the first time. The projects of both companies were nominated for the prestigious Oscar and Emmy awards and became their laureates, the portal writes. Among the most famous are the documentary film “American Factory“, the feature film “Leave the World Behind“ and a number of wildlife documentaries.
