The construction of a plant of the German defense concern Rheinmetall for the production of artillery ammunition without a building permit will begin in Lithuania. The Ministry of Economy has prepared a draft decision for this for the next government meeting.
"The need for new production facilities for defense, providing a reserve of ammunition to provide regular aid to Ukraine is a priority throughout Europe, therefore, in order to speed up the process of building the Rheinmetall plant, permission for this it can be submitted not before the start of the work, but after its completion”, says the project.
For this purpose, the contract must be given an emergency status to guarantee the state security and defense of the country.
The plant for the production of 155 mm artillery shells will be built in the Radvilishki region on state land. The lease contract for the 340-hectare plot should be signed in the first half of July. Work on the site will begin in October.
