BNB: The gross external debt of the "General Government" sector increased by 72.7% to €17.6867 billion.  - 1

The gross external debt of the "General Government" sector at the end of August 2025 increased by as much as 72.7% (by €7.4449 billion) compared to the same month in 2024 and reached €17.6867 billion.

It has the most significant share in the structure of external debt – 33% at the end of August 2025, compared to 237% at the end of August 2024, according to data from the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB).

At the end of August 2025, Bulgaria's gross external debt (private and public) amounted to EUR 53.76059 billion (47.7% of GDP), increasing by EUR 9.0152 billion (an increase of 20.2%) compared to the same period a year earlier, when gross external debt amounted to EUR 44.5907 billion.

At the same time, Bulgaria's short-term liabilities amounted to EUR 8.7005 billion at the end of the eighth month of this year (7.7% of GDP and 16.2% of gross external debt), increasing by EUR 503.3 million (6.1%) compared to August 2024.

In August 2025, the external liabilities of the Central Bank amounted to EUR 1.9393 billion, increasing by EUR 18.0 million compared to a year earlier, while the external liabilities of banks and money market funds in our country, known as "other monetary and financial institutions", amounted to EUR 7.6127 billion (6.8% of GDP), increasing by EUR 1.1325 billion (17.5%) compared to August 2024

Intercompany lending amounted to EUR 12.772 billion (11.4% of GDP) at the end of August 2025, which is EUR 429.3 million (3.3%) less than a year earlier.
