I am not afraid of civil war. This was stated to bTV by the Minister of Interior Daniel Mitov after serious accusations from the opposition and a series of protests in the center of Sofia.
He also announced that he has no intention of resigning, despite the criticism, demands for responsibility and incidents over the past week.
„When the question of resignation is raised, one must say why. It is normal for the opposition to demand resignations – and we have done so. But the Ministry of Interior has done its main job – to protect the lives and health of peaceful protesters“, he said.
According to him, the police acted in accordance with the protocol, and the accusations of “inaction“ are unfounded.
„If the police had shown aggression, you can be sure that they would now be demanding resignations because the police have bloodied the protest. The police are acting according to special instructions and protocols. There are people on the ground who understand how to act on the ground. The main goal is to keep the peaceful protesters and to detain the aggressive ones and to avoid accusations that the police have bloodied the protest. We will analyze where our mistakes are. We can hardly say that we were faultless in every situation. But to shift the responsibility to the Ministry of Internal Affairs for what happened is, to put it mildly, irresponsible. The political responsibility lies with those who lead the protests and organize them,“ added Mitov.
