There is no decision to build a repository for burying nuclear waste in our country, as well as selected fields, stated Energy Minister Vladimir Malinov during his hearing in Parliament. He clarified that for the construction of such a depot, only preliminary studies of suitable terrains were done.
"The conclusion of these preliminary studies is that Bulgaria, in principle, has suitable geological conditions in Northern Bulgaria in the marl massifs of the Mesian Plate. There are no decisions, neither by the Ministry of Energy, nor by The Ministerial Council for the construction of a deep geological repository for the storage of nuclear waste. At the moment, no field studies have been carried out on specific sites on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria", stated Vladimir Malinov and specified that according to the adopted strategy, Bulgaria must build such a repository by 2050, otherwise it cannot create its own nuclear facilities :
"Bulgaria relied for a long time on a contract for the storage and processing of spent nuclear fuel in the Russian Federation. Due to the changed geopolitical environment – however, this practice is currently impossible.
In the medium term, the corresponding storage facility should be built at the Kozloduy NPP site. and to seek a sustainable solution, which will be long-lasting, for their burial".
