With a vigil in Sofia, citizens tried to draw public attention to the law on stray animals in Turkey, BTA reported.
The event took place last night in front of the Turkish ambassador's residence in the capital. It was titled "Vigil in memory of the dogs killed on the streets of Turkey", and there was a police presence in the area.
At the end of July, the Turkish parliament adopted a law that aims to collect millions of stray dogs from the streets and place them in shelters, BTA recalls. The plan has sparked alarm among animal lovers, who believe a sterilization campaign would be a better solution. In addition, according to critics of the legislative measures, they will lead to the killing of a large number of stray dogs.
Turkey's largest opposition force, the People's Republican Party, appealed to the country's Constitutional Court a few days ago with a request to cancel the adopted law on stray animals.
