NSI: Annual inflation in Bulgaria continues to decrease  - 1

After the national statistics reported deflation for three consecutive months in Bulgaria, for the second consecutive month in August, the monthly values were positive - 0.1 percent. Annual inflation in Bulgaria has been in single digits for 15 months now and continues to decrease, according to a report from the National Statistical Institute.

In August 2024, the monthly inflation measured by the consumer price index was 0.1 percent compared to the previous month, and the annual inflation for August 2024 compared to August 2023 was 2.1%, NSI announced today .

For July, the monthly inflation values were positive - 0.8 percent, and the annual inflation for July 2024 compared to July 2023 was 2.4%. In June 2023, it reached single digits (8.7%) - the first time since January 2022, when it was 9.1 percent, a national statistics reference shows.

In June 2024, monthly inflation was minus 0.2% compared to the previous month, and annual - 2.5%, in May, respectively - minus 0.2 percent and 2.3%, and in April - minus 0.3%, and 2.4%.

In March 2024, monthly inflation was positive - 0.2 percent, and annual - 3%, in February - 0.3 percent, and annual - 3.3%, in January, respectively - 0, 5 percent and 3.8%, December 2023 - 0.3% and 4.7%, November - 0.3% and 5.4%, October - 0.4% and 5.8%.

After the reported peak of inflation in Bulgaria in September 2022, when on an annual basis it reached 18.7 percent, the NSI announced in mid-October 2023 annual September values of 6.3%.

The movement of prices of goods and services

In August 2024, compared to the previous month, the largest price increase was in the groups:

• “Food products and soft drinks” (+0.9%),

• “Entertainment and Culture” (+0.5%)

• “Alcoholic beverages and tobacco products” (+0.3%)

The biggest reduction was registered in the groups: “Clothing and shoes” (-3.3%) and “Transport” (-0.9%).

Inflation dynamics

In August 2023, the monthly inflation was 0.4%, and the annual inflation for August 2023 compared to August 2022 - 7.7 percent, according to a reference in the NSI. Monthly inflation for July was 0.9%, and annual inflation was 8.5%. In June, the rate of change in consumer prices on a monthly basis in Bulgaria was negative - 0.4%, and the annual inflation for June 2023 compared to June 2022 was 8.7%.

Annual inflation in June 2023 reached single digits for the first time since January 2022, when it was 9.1 percent.

Annual inflation for May 2023 was 10.1%. Inflation in Bulgaria in April was 11.6 percent compared to April 2022, and in March - 14 percent, which marked a slowdown compared to February, when its annual growth was 16 percent. In January 2023, annual inflation was 16.4%, and in December 2022 - 16.9%. In November 2022, its values were also 16.9 percent. In October 2022, annual inflation was 17.6%.
