Ivan Nachev: It was clear that we cannot expect a large department such as Energy and Regional Development - 1

What Bulgaria received as a department from the EC is an opportunity that is given to our country to prove itself within the framework of the next European Commission and the Bulgarian commissioner. The department “Startups, research and innovation" is new and implies two possibilities - to develop legislation in the direction of supporting innovations, startups in the EU, that is, economic growth, in the context of the new highly digitized economies in the third decade of the XXI century. And an opportunity for us to assert ourselves as one of the countries that has been a leader in initiating such policies.

This is what the political scientist and expert on political integration of the European Union Ivan Nachev told “Focus".

“It was clear that we could not expect a large department like “Energy" and “Regional development", as Bulgaria is not an example of either. It is logical not to rely on such large springs as well as the spring associated with expansion. It was natural to get some kind of peripheral portfolio, since the negotiations that were conducted by the caretaker government did not have the weight of a government elected by the national parliament. "Behind a legally legitimate government issued by the parliament, there is still a political majority that supports it, and such is not behind the official government," explained Nachev.

In his words, the strengthening of Romania's role is the result of Von der Leyen's desire to balance the interests of Eastern and Western European countries, and the interests of large countries against small countries. "Balances are kept to guarantee the influence of the EU in certain regions. In Eastern Europe, Romania emerges as a leading country. The reasons are that in a large part of the Eastern European countries Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, which are close to Ukraine, there are democracies that are being questioned, where human rights are being questioned. In recent years, Romania has overtaken everyone, including Bulgaria. Although outside Schengen and the Eurozone, Romania has shown that it is fighting corruption and protecting citizens' rights. In the context of the war with Ukraine, Romania has maintained the most stable position during all these years," noted Ivan Nachev.

According to him, in the European Parliament, the Bulgarian MEPs have to look for and make coalitions in the EP, so that Mrs. Zaharieva's candidacy can pass. "Because she is not without problems, there are publications in Western Europe that comment on her political life and scandals related to her political activities and members of her family. And that can cast a shadow over her hearing. The procedure includes not only approval by the EP, but also approval by the highest institution of the EU, where the heads of state and government are, i.e. balance must be sought in the other direction as well. "Bulgaria has not yet finished its work to get support at these two levels for Ms. Zaharieva's candidacy," concluded Ivan Nachev.
