Dresden on alert: Brace for possible flooding after Elbe river reaches high levels - 1

Eastern The German city of Dresden is preparing for possible floods after the incoming waters that flooded Central Europe in recent days as a result of torrential rains reached significant levels, reports DPA, quoted by BTA.

The level of the Elbe River reached 6 meters, prompting the authorities to declare the penultimate level of alert.

This means there is a risk of flooding for built-up areas, major roads and train routes.

The measuring station in Shona on the border with the Czech Republic showed that the Elbe reached 6.56 meters this morning.

The rising waters are expected to continue throughout the day, but are forecast to recede overnight.

Authorities do not believe that the river level will reach 7 meters, which would lead to the declaration of the highest level of alert.

Germany was largely spared the worst of the unprecedented flooding and rainfall that has hit central and eastern Europe in recent days.

At least 20 people have been confirmed dead as a result of the disaster in Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Italy and Romania.
