Physician academician Alexander Petrov has died, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences announced, dariknews.bg reported.

Academician Alexander Petrov was born on 05/27/1948 in Stara Zagora. In 1970, he graduated in physics at the University of St. Cl. Ohridski“ and began working at the Institute of Solid State Physics at the BAS. In 1974, he became a "candidate of physical sciences". In 1984, he was elected as a "senior II century.“ In 1987, he received the scientific degree "Doctor of Physical Sciences". In 1988, he received the scientific title of "Associate Doctor of Science". I st.“, and in 2003 he was elected academician.

Academician Petrov is an internationally recognized physicist. The scientific field in which he works is the physics of liquid crystals and the physics of living matter, and the scientific directions in which his main achievements include: thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystals, as well as liquid crystal biological structures and biological membranes. His scientific results are used in optoelectronics, nanotechnology, membrane science, etc.

He is the author of over 150 scientific articles and 3 monographs, most of which were published in renowned journals and publishing houses. Acad. Petrov was awarded the prize in Physics of BAS "Acad. Georgi Nadjakov“ for his first monograph, which is a basic teaching aid for physicists and chemists.
Academician Petrov is the head of a number of international and national projects with a significant economic contribution: the INERA international project, from which there are millions of euros in revenue; European projects under the "Copernicus" program; projects in line with NATO, as well as in line with cooperation with Russia, England, the USA, etc.

Academician Petrov is known for his teaching and organizational activities at home and abroad. He has held 20 temporary positions abroad as a visiting scientist, visiting associate professor, and visiting professor, and together with leading biophysicists from the United States, organized two symposia on bioflexoelectricity in Buffalo, 2001 and in Texas, 2003, and in 2016 . gives an opening invited talk at the Symposium on the Physics of Excitable Membranes at the “Niels Bohr” (Copenhagen).

Academician Petrov has been awarded various awards and honors. Winner of the BAS Prize in Physics for 2000; of the “Fredericks” medal of the Russian Liquid Crystal Society for “Remarkable works in the field of liquid crystal physics” (2004); of the MES Award “For a special contribution to science” (Scientist of the Year 2007); of the Badge of Honor of the BAS “Marin Drinov” on tape (2008); of the Jubilee Medal of Honor “Ioan Ursu“ of the Balkan Physical Union (2018) and is a laureate of the order “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” necklace (2018) for special merits in the field of education and natural sciences.
