On Christmas Eve, the sacred rock city of Perperikon received another great recognition, BNT reported.
After a month ago it entered the top ten of the ranking of the most interesting archaeological sites in Europe according to the authoritative British newspaper "The Guardian", it has now found its way onto the pages of the famous American website for world tourism www.islands.com.
The long-time head of the Perperikon excavations, Prof. Nikolay Ovcharov, explained that the article about Perperikon is titled: "European Machu Picchu is a stunning ancient site, more accessible to visit than the one in South America" and was published on December 20, 2024. It is the work of British journalist S.J. Armstrong, who since 2022. is one of the editors of National Geographic Traveler.
Armstrong's article aroused enormous interest on the net and was immediately reprinted by www.threads.net, www.newsbreak.com, www.tripadvisor.com and other sites. Prof. Ovcharov also quotes an excerpt from the text, which says that Machu Picchu was built only 550 years ago and on the threshold of the early modern era in Europe, just after another city in the mountains of Southeast Europe began to decline. Then Perperikon was destroyed in the Bulgarian mountains, which in the 14th century put an end to its 6,000-year life.
It also says that archaeologists believe this is the site of the Temple of Dionysus, where Herodotus describes the journeys of pilgrims seeking an encounter with the oracle of the god of wine, added Prof. Ovcharov.
