"The Constitutional Court has already ruled on the issue, the decision was 10 to 1, the year was different. However, the treaty that we signed when entering the European Union clearly states that we must adopt the euro at the moment we meet the criteria. And not in any specific year. We have met the criteria. The convergence report, which will be released on June 4, will clearly state that all criteria have been met".
This was recalled to "Panorama" on BNT by the co-chairman of "Continuing the Change" Assen Vassilev.
He expressed a categorical opinion against President Rumen Radev's proposal to hold a referendum on the adoption of the euro.
In "Panorama" Assen Vassilev emphasized that the issue of the euro has already been resolved at the legislative level and Bulgaria has fulfilled all the criteria for joining the eurozone.
"This is a replacement of the question. If this was the question, it should have been asked in 2007, before we signed the treaty with the European Union. If this was the question, it should have been asked in 2016, when the intention was announced. If this was the question, it should have been asked in 2022, when we clearly stated in the Petkov government and the steps were taken to change the legislation. Denkov's cabinet set it as its main goal. All the legislation was adopted. There are three or four decisions of the parliament with over 160 votes for adopting the euro as soon as possible. So this issue has been resolved long ago. It has been resolved legislatively. There is no legislative act between now and January 1, 2026 that needs to be adopted," said the former finance minister.
