After 33 days of vacation, MPs will receive increased salaries between 7,000 and 12,000 leva - 1

On September 3, when their 33-day summer vacation ends, MPs will return to the plenary hall with increased monthly salaries.

The basic salary of MPs is increasing by over 11% - from 7,137 leva so far, it will reach 7,935 leva. The reason is the data published by the National Statistical Institute on the average salary in the second quarter of 2025, which marked a growth of 13% compared to the same period last year and is now 2,547 leva.

According to the parliamentary regulations, a number of additional payments are added to the basic salary. Participation in a standing committee brings another 15% of the basic salary, and each MP is a member of at least one committee. The chairmen or deputy chairmen of committees receive an additional increase of 35%. Possession of an academic degree, such as a “doctor“, adds another 10% to the amount.

In addition, for each year of service, members of parliament receive a grade of 1% of the salary, and the head of state - 1.4%, according to the Labor Code and collective labor agreements. Thus, with 20 years of work experience, an MP can add about 2,000 leva to his salary. This means that for some MPs, monthly income can exceed 12,000 leva.

The top of the state salary hierarchy is the president, whose basic salary is double that of a deputy - 14,870 leva. With additional payments resulting from the work experience of the head of state Rumen Radev, the amount can reach over 19,000 leva per month.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, in this case Assoc. Prof. Natalia Kiselova, receives 55% above the average for MPs, which also puts her salary above 16,000 leva. The Prime Minister has the same salary as the Speaker of Parliament, and the ministers - as many as the chairmen of parliamentary committees.

According to the latest NSI data, the highest salaries in the country continue to be reported in Sofia - 3467 leva on average per month, although this amount has decreased by about 150 leva compared to the first quarter of the year.
