A large fire was spotted in the area behind the Sofia Thermal Power Plant on Saturday evening. The news first spread on social networks, where eyewitnesses posted photos and videos of the flames.
According to witnesses, the fire was also visible from the Tsarigradski residential complex, located near the power plant. “A glow and thick smoke were clearly visible from our balconies,“ users shared on Facebook.
A report about the incident was reported to 112, but at the moment there is no official information from the fire department or from “Toplofikatsiya Sofia“ about the scale of the fire, its source or possible damages.
The area around the Sofia Thermal Power Plant is not the first time that fires have occurred. In recent years, incidents have been registered in abandoned buildings and transformer facilities, which were brought under control relatively quickly. So far, there is no information about serious damage to the plant's facilities or about any casualties.
Residents of the area remain in tension, as there is no confirmed information about the consequences of the fire. It is expected that the competent institutions - the Sofia Fire Department and the Sofia District Heating Company - will issue a statement in the coming hours.
Until such a statement is provided, it remains unclear whether the fire affected the thermal power plant's infrastructure or developed in its vicinity.
