Let's restore trust in each other and in the power of the state, said Vice President Iliana Yotova on Facebook on the occasion of 140 years since the Unification of Bulgaria, quoted by BTA.

"I cannot accept that 140 years ago our ancestors built and strengthened the Bulgarian statehood, and today we are destroying, collapsing, driven by personal or political considerations. There cannot be such a huge gap between the “builders of modern Bulgaria Bulgaria“, as immortalized by Zahari Stoyanov, and our generation.

And today we have the strength and the desire to build a bridge over the muddy terrain of anger, confrontation and hatred. Because we realize that we are not just citizens of a geographical territory, but a community. Together we can restore the thinned fabric of public relations and the crumbling statehood. Let's restore trust in each other and in the power of the state to guarantee security, justice and development", points out Yotova.

She notes that instead of a barrier 140 years ago, the border between the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia became a bridge between Bulgarians striving for unification and common development, and Bulgarians then sought the power of consent, not the power of division. "If we have learned this lesson, Bulgaria will not be the country of conflicts, but the country of creation", she states Vice President.

Unification is that glorious date in Bulgarian history, when the will of the people becomes a powerful force and forces domestic and foreign politicians to overcome cowardice, fear and doubts, governments and empires to abandon calculations, schemes and interests and to recognize the unification of the Bulgarians, adds Iliyana Yotova.

BTA recalls that today, the 140th anniversary of the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria with Eastern Rumelia will be marked with ceremonies throughout the country. The culmination of the celebrations is in Plovdiv. At 8:30 p.m. on the "Unification" square in the city in front of the monument of the same name, a solemn torch-lighting ceremony will be held. It will be attended by representative formations from the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), the 110th logistics regiment and the 91st General Support Engineer Battalion from the Ground Forces, the Third Air Base and the 24th Air Base from the Air Force.
