The German concern Rheinmetall and the Victoria plant in the Romanian city of Arad will build a large gunpowder plant. A cooperation agreement was signed in Bucharest.
According to Armin Paperger, head of the German concern, the plant will produce 200,000 tons of gunpowder for local needs, in particular for Soviet 120 mm and medium-caliber ammunition. Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Boloian, for his part, welcomed Rheinmetall's agreement to revise the contract so that part of the supply chain for the future plant would be local, which would allow the company to better integrate into the Romanian economy. “Thanks to this partnership, Romania is starting to look like a potential player in the defense industry of Southeast Europe“, stressed Boloian, speaking at a press conference after the signing of the document. “The future gunpowder factory represents an investment of 500 million euros, approximately 700 new jobs and especially the advantage of gunpowder production in Romania.“
“The Rheinmetall-Victoria gunpowder factory will be the most modern company in the world at the moment for the production of dual- and triple-base propellants,“, noted Paperger. “The whole world, especially Europe, needs this type of fuel to support defense, and Romania needs it too. We are building a capacity for approximately 60,000 charges or 300,000 modular charges, making it one of the largest enterprises in the world for artillery systems".
