The most dangerous facilities at the ammunition plant, which Lithuania is starting to build together with the German defense concern Rheinmetall, will be protected by earth embankments nearly 20 meters high. Tomas Varniackas, head of Epso-G Invest, the project's general contractor, announced this on Lithuanian national radio LRT.
“The safety of residents of Baišogala, near which the plant will be located, will be ensured by technological solutions, the specific design of the buildings, sufficient distance from the plant and embankments separating the most dangerous facilities from each other,“ he said. “The embankments will be up to 19 meters high.“
The plant will be built near the town of Baishogala in the northwestern part of the country. A 340-hectare plot of land has been allocated for it. The official groundbreaking ceremony will take place on November 4.
The partners have created a joint venture, Rheinmetall Defence Lithuania. Vilnius holds a 49% stake. The project will cost up to EUR 300 million. The plant will produce 10,000 155-millimeter artillery shells per year.
