Major expansion of terminal “Departing“ was realized at Avram Janku airport in the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca. The investment is the record amount of EUR 73 million.
The project is implemented with European funds, from the state budget and own funds, through the Operational Program “Large Infrastructure” 2014-2020 and includes an expansion of the departure terminal by around 7200 sq m, creating flows for Schengen and non-Schengen destinations, 3 new security flows equipped with state-of-the-art security control machines and platform expansion for aircraft parking with approximately 9000 sq.m.
„The expansion of the passenger terminal at the international airport “Avram Yanku“ in Cluj-Napoca is a new success of the cooperation between the central and local authorities! Financed by the Ministry of Transport, through European funds and by the airport administration (with its own funds), the airport will be able to operate international flights under much better conditions. In addition to flights to and from the Schengen area, this airport will soon be able to operate flights to and from the US”, Romania's Transport Minister Sorin Grindianu said.
The terminal was expanded in the northern and eastern directions, and the aim was to increase the area of the waiting rooms from about 400 sq.m to 1,700 sq.m for domestic departures, respectively from 1,800 sq.m to about 5,100 sq.m for external departures.
As part of the project is the installation of photovoltaic panels, approximately 270 panels, so that 40% of the electricity for the terminals can be supplied by this system of panels.
Cluj Airport General Manager David Ciccio said that through this investment, passenger handling capacity has been increased.
„This project started in May 2023, in 1 year it was completed. Through the implemented expansion, we will be able to serve up to 4.5 million passengers. Passenger comfort has been improved and suitable conditions have been created for the Schengen and non-Schengen areas. Last year we had 3.2 million passengers, approximately 70% were Schengen passengers and approximately 30% were non-Schengen. The terminal will be operational from June 7. We have 7 commercial areas and 2 business halls. In the next month we will have 7 more function spaces. We will have about 2,700 square meters of commercial space. While we worked on the expansion of the terminal, we created temporary conditions for passengers in containers for a year and we thank the passengers for their understanding,” said David Ciccio.
