A London townhouse that was once the home of the British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, hit the market for £3.65 million. Built in the early 1720s, the Georgian House is in Westminster. Between 1984 and 1993 it was owned by the late Lord Alistair McAlpine, the Treasurer of the Conservative Party.
McAlpine offered Thatcher and her husband the townhouse, a stone's throw from the Houses of Parliament, as a place to live after she left power in 1990.
Her presence in the house is still visible in the form of a “division bell”, which she insisted on being installed, used to summon members of parliament when a vote is due.
„For many decades this house has hosted famous political figures and has an incredible history,” said Harry Laughlin, director of Dexters, Westminster. “Given its important heritage, we expect significant interest in the property.“
The four-storey house has a built-up area of 202 sq.m. It features a spacious reception room with period fireplace and original Georgian wood paneling, a formal dining room which is also paneled and has a period fireplace, a kitchen with handcrafted cupboards which opens onto the private courtyard garden and a pair of paneled reception rooms .
There are three bedrooms, including a self-contained guest or staff suite.
The house overlooks the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey and its ancient college garden.
