Meta Corporation's plans to build a new data center with artificial intelligence in the US, which will run on energy generated by a nuclear power plant, were thwarted due to a rare species of bees, the newspaper The Financial Times reported, citing its sources.
They said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wanted to strike a construction deal with an existing US nuclear power plant operator to power a new data center but faced difficulties, including environmental issues. According to sources, Zuckerberg has acknowledged that the presence of rare bees in the area of potential construction complicates the project. It is noted that the corporation continues to explore proposals for the use of carbon-free energy, including nuclear.
Meta declined to comment on the case.
In March 2024 the American company Amazon decided to use the energy generated by nuclear power plants. In September, Microsoft announced it would begin buying power generated by the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. Later, in October of this year, the American IT company Google made a similar decision.
