The wife of Asen Dimitrov, who was killed in a brutal car accident in the capital's "Hristo Botev" district in mid-July, spoke to BNT. Through tears, she demanded justice for his ridiculous death.
It became clear that 19-year-old Valentin Asenov, who caused the accident in which the 37-year-old father of three died, was detained for only 24 hours.
The reason - the prosecutor's office did not have enough information about what exactly happened. This was stated in "The Day Begins on Sunday" by the spokesman for the Sofia District Prosecutor's Office, Nikolay Nikolaev. He confirmed that the young man's drug test showed amphetamines, and that he himself was a prosecutor in a previous case of the 19-year-old young man, in which he received a suspended sentence for robbery and assault.
Assen's widow - Zhivka, is coming home from Dublin today, where they have lived and worked for 15 years. She is on antidepressants and still can't believe what happened. She is puzzled how, with a suspended sentence, drug use and causing death by driving in the opposite direction, the perpetrator is at large.
"Above all, we are people, people who should feel this burden on their conscience, because three more children will never say daddy. That they will be alone, that I will always be alone. We cannot continue to lose our loved ones without any guilt in a ridiculous way. I hope they take matters into their own hands and solve the case," said Zhivka Stefanova, wife of Assen, who was killed in the accident.
According to the spokesperson for the Sofia District Prosecutor's Office Nikolay Nikolaev, detaining the 19-year-old perpetrator for only 24 hours is undoubtedly a mistake, because there are grounds to believe that he is not safe.
"In my opinion, there are undoubtedly such grounds, but evidence of guilt must be collected," said Prosecutor Nikolay Nikolaev.
One of the pieces of evidence is a recording of the accident from July 14. It clearly shows how Valentin swerved into the oncoming lane and hit the ATV in which Assen was riding. Initially, the district prosecutor's office took over the case, because the man did not die on the spot. After he died in hospital 6 days later, the case was taken over by the city prosecutor's office. The blood test should confirm the use of amphetamines.
"There are frequent mistakes with amphetamines, so only blood can tell. I want to dispel all doubts. My colleagues from the city prosecutor's office will get to the objective truth in this case and we should have no doubts about that, no one will go unpunished," commented prosecutor Nikolay Nikolaev.
The door to the house where 19-year-old Valentin Asenov lives with his family is locked and no one opens it. Most neighbors claim they don't know him.
The city prosecutor's office promised to provide more details about the case tomorrow.
