GERGYOVDEN
Hristo Botev
"Pasites, dobrye narody!
Vas ne razbubit čestych;
Начто штадам дары всбоды?
Іхо штадам дары всбоды?
cut or shear..."
A.S. Pushkin
Rejoice, people! Old and young
Praise God and the Tsar today too!
Today is St. George's Day. A flock of sheep
that bleated yesterday after the shepherd,
when that Tsar, carefree, stupid,
like all earthly kings,
led a flock with a handsome crook
and with clever dogs - faithful ministers,
without wallets, but also without salary,
to whom the same Tsar look,
"Blessed is she - he would say, - live the sheep
and more honorably than my people!"
And a flock of small lambs set out,
and wandered about, killed by the way,
so that every young one might lie under the knife
for Saint George - God's robber...
A soulless, stupid, rotten corpse
does he want sacrifices? Does the shepherd want,
the hungry throat, the drunken priest,
as the king wants from you, people
for his vile harems
and for those who torture and rob you;
and you you give them your sweat, your blood
and you even dance when they beat you!
Here - today rich and poor,
drunk there - they sing songs
and praise God and the king with the priest...
Rejoice, people! Thus sheep bleat
and they follow the shepherd with the dogs.
