The work of the Austrian symbolist artist Gustav Klimt, titled "Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer", was sold at auction in New York for $236.4 million, Sotheby's announced in X.
According to the auction house, the painting is the most valuable work of modern art ever sold at auction.
„Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer“ depicts the daughter of Klimt's richest patrons. The girl is depicted in a light, colorful robe. The artist created it two years before his death.
Gustav Klimt is a famous Austrian painter and one of the founders of the Art Nouveau style. He was one of the founders (1897) and president of the art association “Vienna Secession“. His most famous paintings are “The Kiss“, “Judith and Holofernes“ and “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer“.
