A Czech court in Brno sentenced a man to more than 10 years in prison for pushing a German tourist off the wall of Špilberk Castle, a popular tourist destination in the city dating back to the medieval period, DPA reported, citing BTA, citing the Czech News Agency.

The 37-year-old man, who was celebrating his bachelor party with friends and relatives in early September last year when the attack took place, will also have to pay victim compensation equal to about $16,000. The man has the right to appeal the court's decision.

During the hearings, the court found that the defendant had been talking to the German tourist who was sitting on the castle wall. The defendant pushed the man, who fell from a height of about six meters. In the accident, he suffered a fracture of two vertebrae and injuries to his back.

The judge in the case, Martin Verbick, defined the act as "an expression of complete disregard and disregard for the life of another person and as a completely unprovoked crime". He specified that before the attack there was no conflict between the two men.

The defendant's attorneys appealed for an acquittal, saying there was a case of mistaken identity.
