A pair of polar bears attacked and killed a worker at a remote government radar site in the Canadian Arctic, the operator of the facility announced on Friday, NOVA reported.
The attack occurred Thursday at the outpost on Brevoort Island, in Canada's far northeast Nunavut territory, said Nasittuq Corporation, the logistics company contracted to operate the site.
„An attack by two polar bears resulted in the loss of one of our valuable employees”, the message said. “Nasittuq employees arrived at the scene and one of the animals was killed,”, the logistics company also stated.
The site is one of dozens of Northern Warning System outposts that dot Canada's far north, forming a line of defense against incursions by aircraft or cruise missile attacks. Radar coverage spans over 5,000 kilometers from Alaska to Labrador in eastern Canada.
