On August 1, 1936, Führer Adolf Hitler opened the 11 Summer Olympics in Berlin, NOVA recalls.
At the head of the Bulgarian delegation is Tsar Boris III, who accepted Hitler's invitation and attended as his guest of honor. He is the only head of state who accepts the Führer's invitation.
The only other candidate host city is Barcelona. After the Nazis came to power in Germany, they saw the Olympic Games as an ideal opportunity to spread their ideas and gain wide fame. This is the first Olympics in which the ceremony of bringing the Olympic flame has been introduced. The hosts win the most medals, but their dominance is not complete due to the presence of athletes such as Jesse Owens, who won 4 gold medals.
At the opening, however, the spectators were greeted by an unusual challenge - a flock of birds dumped their feces on the stadium.
